The FR-8 FAQ Page
Over
the 8 or so years that I have been posting my FR-8 articles, the same
questions often arise. I guess its long overdue to post this brief FAQ
page.
How
Do I adjust the sights on my FR-8?
Is
it safe to shoot commercial ammo in MY FR-8?
How
can I scope my FR-8?
Where
can I get parts for my FR-8?
Where
can I get a Manual for this gun?
How
do I adjust the sights on my FR-8?
Make a
tool with a proper sized roll pin (any auto supply shop) that "just
fits" into the hole in the top of the sight hood. All it takes is
a few minutes with a grinder and some files.
You will
notice that the point of the front site is not centered on the base
it is machined on...This way the windage is adjusted as the site is rotated
as well as the elevation...You adjust elevation first and then fine tune
the
windage...Its a compromise but it does the job.
Is
it safe to shoot commercial ammo in MY FR-8?
Every rifle is unique and its past is unknown. Every owner is unique and
his knowledge and experience varies.
I cannot see your rifle. It could be the nicest looking FR-8 in the world
but be totally unsafe. It might look like it was dragged thru the back
woods for years but still be totally sound. The same holds true for any
Ruger, Savage or Remchester out there!
So, to answer your question you will need to ship me your rifle.
I will inspect it, check the throat, magna flux the receiver, test fire
it and retest it afterwards. I will repeat this multiple times. I will
be done with your gun in just a few years.
Hope this doesn't sound too sarcastic - its the only way to properly answer
such a generalized question.
How
can I scope my FR-8?
The
only way to solidly mount a scope would be to grind off the rear sight
and mount and then drill and tap the rifle for standard scope mount bases.
I
hope though that you will decide against such a irreversible modification.
The standard sights on this gun work very well out to 300 Meters. If your
intended use is hunting, I don't think you will be any more quick on target
or any more accurate than with the standard rear and front sights.
If you bought this gun to shoot benchrest matches with, you bought the
wrong gun.
Seriously,
the limitations of this sighting system for me is the rather coarse front
sight blade. But by using a 6 o'clock hold on a target at 100 Meters,
I can easily hold 2 to 3 MOA. You will never need more for most hunting
or plinking applications.
I urge everyone to practice for a full season with the standard sights
before going through with a permanent modification like scope mounting
on this gun.
Where
can I get parts for my FR-8?
I'm
sorry but I do not know. I do not sell parts. Plus I am in Canada so most
sources I would contact would not be the best source for someone in the
USA.
Best
bet in general is to post ads on various Trader boards such as the one
Tuco runs ( Tuco's Gunboards )
or watch Ebay for parts.
